Working Principle of FG Gear Flowmeter

A gear flowmeter is a flow instrument for high-precision measurement of volume flow. It operates on the positive displacement principle. The flow of the medium causes the gears to rotate, and the rotation of the gears is scanned by 2 non-contact pulse detectors. Each tooth generates a pulse, which ultimately produces a frequency signal proportional to the flow rate, and then the flow rate Q is obtained.

Gear flowmeters feature high processing precision, precise installation, and high resolution. They require the measured medium to be lubricating and cannot measure non-lubricating media such as water. Meanwhile, gear flowmeters are not suitable for fluids containing solid particles. If the measured liquid medium is mixed with gas, it will also cause measurement errors.

The gears precisely adapted to the housing form the key to the measuring unit. The rotation of the measuring unit is recorded contactlessly by the signal acquisition system and converted into digital pulses.

Gear flowmeters can be used to measure all pumped liquids with a certain lubricating capacity, such as gasoline, (low-flammability) mineral oil, paint, grease, resin, etc.
